Costs and booking

How much does physiotherapy cost in Birmingham?

"How much is physio?" is one of the first things people search, and many clinics make it harder than it needs to be to find out. Prices vary between practitioners and locations, so rather than quote a "typical" figure, this guide explains what drives the price and what you should expect to get for it.

What you're actually paying for

You're paying for time with a qualified clinician who works out what is causing your problem, treats it, and gives you a plan. A good session should leave you knowing what is going on and what to do next, even if you never book again.

What affects the price

  • Session length. A 60-minute assessment costs more than a 30-minute review, but the longer time is what allows a proper history, examination and treatment.
  • First appointment vs follow-ups. Many clinics charge more for the first visit because it is longer and includes the full assessment.
  • Who you see. Experience and specialism (for example musculoskeletal or sports) can affect the price.
  • Location and setting. City centre rooms typically cost more to run than suburban ones.
  • What's included. Some clinics charge extra for treatments such as acupuncture or massage, so it's worth asking.

What the £70 assessment includes here

The first appointment at Apo at the Holloway is £70 for 60 minutes, one to one. It includes:

  • A detailed history and movement assessment
  • A clear explanation of what is causing your pain, in plain language
  • Hands-on treatment on the day
  • A practical plan with exercises you can fit into your routine

Acupuncture, sports massage, cupping or red light therapy are used alongside it where they're appropriate for you. Follow-up sessions, if you need them, are arranged directly with Joel after you've been seen. If you later want coached, gym-based rehab, personal training sessions are £60 each.

Questions to ask any clinic before you book

  • Is the first appointment the same price as a follow-up?
  • How long is the session, and how much of it is with the physio?
  • Are treatments like acupuncture or massage charged separately?
  • Will I leave with a plan, or just treatment?
  • Do you provide receipts for claiming back?

Private physio vs the NHS

NHS physiotherapy is free at the point of use, but waiting times for an appointment can be long in some areas. Private physiotherapy lets you book directly without a GP referral and choose times that suit you, including evenings. Both routes are valid, and the right one depends on how quickly you want to be seen and what you can access.

Claiming the cost back

You get a receipt after every session. Some employers and private health plans reimburse physiotherapy, but whether a claim is accepted depends on your employer or provider, so check with them before you book.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what is going on, how long you've had it, and what you need to get back to. Some people need one or two sessions and a home plan, others need a longer course. You'll leave the assessment with an honest idea of which applies to you.
