Sciatica physiotherapy in Birmingham City Centre
Pain, tingling or numbness travelling from your back or buttock down the leg? This pattern is commonly called sciatica. A proper assessment shows where it is coming from and what is likely to help.
What's usually behind sciatica
- An irritated nerve root in the lower back, sometimes linked to a disc
- Sensitivity and tightness in the surrounding muscles and joints
- Long spells of sitting or a sudden increase in lifting or training load
- Symptoms that vary with position, which the assessment uses to guide treatment
How physiotherapy helps
Your first appointment is a 60-minute one-to-one assessment for £70. It covers:
- A detailed assessment including checks of strength, sensation and reflexes in the legs
- Positions, movements and hands-on treatment aimed at easing nerve irritation
- A graded exercise plan as things settle, so you can return to normal activity
- Clear guidance on what to expect, and when to seek further investigation
You'll leave knowing what's going on, what you can do about it and what happens next. Evening and weekend appointments are available at Apo at the Holloway, Birmingham City Centre. Receipts are provided for claiming back through work where your employer allows.
When to get help urgently
Seek urgent medical help (A&E or 999) if you notice loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, symptoms in both legs, or a leg that is becoming rapidly weaker, such as a foot that drags.
Common questions
How long does sciatica last?
Many cases improve over weeks, but it varies. Your assessment will give you a realistic view of your own situation.
Should I have a scan?
Not always. Scans are considered when symptoms are severe, worsening or not improving as expected. Joel will guide you on this.
Is it safe to exercise with sciatica?
Usually yes, with the right choices. Staying gently active tends to help, and the plan is adjusted to how your symptoms behave.
